Parent's of John Larkin Davis of Stoddard County, Missouri
John Larkin Davis is my Great Great Grandfather. It has taken me 10 years of online research and DNA to figure out the parents of John Larkin Davis.
John was born about Jan 1864 in Jefferson County, Missouri.
His father was John R Davis and mother was Teressa Jane Pyeatt.
John R Davis was born abt 1832 in Jefferson County, MO and Teressa was born abt 1845 in Jefferson Co MO.
John and Teressa married 11 Oct 1863 in Jefferson County, Missouri.
Teressa remarried to George Washington Peppers 26 April 1866 Jefferson County, MO. So John R Davis died before 26 April 1866.
It appears that John R Davis probably died in the civil war .
We first find John Larkin Davis on a 1870 census of Big River Township , Jefferson County, MO. Hillsboro is the post office. He is age 9 years old and living with his grandfather Joshua Davis who is aged 61 on the census .
Joshua died on 30 Aug 1879 in Pulaski County, MO. Larkin Davis is listed as an heir of Joshua.
John Larkin Davis's mother was newly married and on the 1870 census of Monroe County, IL with her husband George Peppers.
After Joshua died it appears that John Larkin Davis went to live with his mother and stepfather because we have him next on the census with George Peppers in 1880 in Elk, Stoddard County, MO.
John is listed on that census as John L Peppers age 16 born abt 1864 in MO. A few households away is John's future wife Nancy Swift's Uncle Felix David Swift.
John Larkin married Nancy Paralee Swift on Oct 10 1886 in Stoddard Co., MO at the home of Nancy's father Rev. William Franklin Swift.
They had children:
1. Nora Lee Davis born 15 Sep 1888 Dexter, Stoddard Co., MO.
2. Cordelia "Corda" Davis born 3 Jul 1890 Dexter, Stoddard Co., MO
3. Bertha Victoria Davis born 11 Nov 1892 Dexter, Stoddard Co., MO
4. Frederick William "Fred" Davis born 11 Feb 1895 Dexter, MO
& 5. David Leonard "Leonard" Davis born 20 Jul 1898 Dexter, MO
Nancy Swift Davis died either during or after the birth of David Leonard Davis and before the 1900 census where John Larkin Davis appeared widowed. He was likely living on his mother in law, Ethelinda Owens Swift's property in 1900. Ethelinda left some property to John and Nancy's children when she died.
John Larkin Davis remarried Amanda "Mandy" Boone on 27 Mar 1903 in Stoddard County, MO
They had children:
1. Leon Otis Davis born 6 Aug 1907 Dexter, MO
2. Luther Davis born 27 Oct 1910 Stoddard Co MO died 16 June 1912 Liberty, Stoddard, MO
3. Franklin E "Frank" Davis born 2 Feb 1915 Dexter, MO
4. Willard Davis born 12 Jul 1919 Tallapoosa, New Madrid Co., MO
John is on the 1910 census with Mandy and children Bertha , Fred, Leonard & Leon Davis. He is born abt 1866 in MO and is a Black Smith Horse-shoeing.
Cannot find the family in 1920.
Mandy died 29 Feb 1924 in Liberty , Stoddard, MO. and John Larkin Davis died 30 Aug 1925 in New Madrid County, MO according to his probate. Son Fred Davis was the admin of his estate. His listed heirs & their addresses were:
1. Nola (Nora) Buttrey of the city of Memphis, TN
2. Corda (Cordelia) Stallings of the county of New Madrid, MO
3. Bertha Faterage (Bertha Davis McFatridge) of New Madrid MO
4. Fred Davis New Madrid Co MO
5. Leonard Davis New Madrid Co MO
6. Leon Davis New Madrid Co MO
7. Frank Davis New Madrid Co MO
8 . Willard Davis New Madrid Co MO
When I first started my search for John Larkin Davis all we had was the 1900 census and the marriage to Nancy and Mandy,
We had no death on John or any clue to his parents no matter how hard we tried . DNA changed this.
I kept finding DNA matches to Joshua Davis's line in mine and my Aunt Donna's DNA so I went investigating and found a blog on Joshua Davis written by Mary Bittick Gallano. In it was listed Larkin Davis as an heir to Joshua Davis . I contacted Mary . without her and I working together this would likely never have been solved. I thank her for her help. I give credit where it was due. She pointed me to the 1880 census of George Peppers.
John R Davis was the son of Joshua Davis and Eliza Null.
Joshua Davis was the son of James Davis & Sarah Bell.
James Davis was the son of Lucy Wideman and an unknown West African slave. ( I have a trace of West African DNA 23 & Me)
I match the DNA of the Wideman's , The Null's, The Davis's, and the Pyeatt's & more. Not only I match it but all of John Larkin Davis's descendant's who have done DNA also match.
Thanks to DNA and collaborating we have this SOLVED!
I have written this so that credit is given in the future to myself and Mary Bittick Gallano for solving this mystery.
